Metalwork is an option subject available at Coláiste Dún an Rí. The teacher is Mr. O'Brien. Students will study the subject for three years and will at the end of that cycle be knowledgeable in the area of the nature of metals, platics and wood, marking out and measuring, the pillar drill, lathework, fittings and assemblies, design, and health and safety. Students will be given the opportunity to design and make their own projects as part of the class group during 1st and 2nd year. The material most used will be metals such as aluminium, brass and perspex but students will also learn about and use various other materials such as steel/wood/glass etc...
In 3rd year students will undertake their junior certificate project which is specified by the State Examinations Commission. Students will submit an individual project worth 37.5% of their final grade in Metalwork. They will also partake in a day practical examinations were they will be assigned a project to make on the day which will assess students practical capabilities. This exam is also worth 37.5% of the final grade. The remaining (25%) marks are gained from a terminal theory exam in June along with all other subjects being studied.
